Let's meet Candice, a regular of Anticafé LaFayette who, along with her freelance activity, has just launched a new project. She's telling us all about it!

Hello Candice, who are you?

Hello! My name is Candice Poitrey. I am a freelance creator/writer and I love nature, animals and hiking. During the week, I hang out at Anticafé LaFayette.

You just started a project with us, can you tell us more about it?

Of course! I have designed an interactive map that allows Parisians to reintroduce the concept of “Countryside Sunday” in their lives. The tool solves some major problems when you want to plan a hike around Paris: how to get there, how long it takes, what trails to follow and what it looks like there, beyond the ring road?

To solve all this, I first covered 550 km of trails this summer on the GR1 (using public transport to go home every night to sleep). I took video shots of each route and recorded all my tracks. Then, I spent 2 months at Anticafé LaFayette to build a website called www.randonneeautourdeparis.com and that was advertised on My Little Paris, RFI, Oui FM Morning Rock and Chilowé.

Any advice for those who wish to launch their project?

To act. Acting and Daring: there’s a time to think about your project and there’s a time when taking time to think about it becomes an excuse not to achieve it and confront it with reality. And then, dare. I noticed that only in this grey area between doubt, smile, fear and excitement does something really happen that gives a new dimension to the project.

How would you describe Anticafé? What do you find there?

Working regular hours at Anticafé LaFayette allows me to structure my freelance life, increase my productivity and create a better balance between my professional and private life. The team at Anticafé LaFayette is very cool, makes awesome double coconut lattes for me and brightens my work days. In the past few weeks, I’ve also been talking more with the other coworkers and it opened up other very exciting opportunities for me.

We went to meet Manu, a photographer who is passionate about travel and who is currently exhibiting at Anticafé Bordeaux!

Hello Manu, who are you?

Hello, my real name is Emmanuel but everyone calls me Manu, I’m 31 years old. I come from the Toulouse area but Bordeaux has been my home base for so many years now. After my Baccalaureate, I studied Tourism Development between the Dordogne region and Ireland. 5 years ago, photography came into my life and never left.

What is your background?

Since I was 18, I had been using a small compact Kodak camera. In 2007, I went on an internship in the deep parts of Ireland, in Connemara, and was immediately fascinated by the changing lights and colors of the landscapes. Ireland is a delight for any landscape photographer.

In 2014, I bought my first SLR camera and came to Paris for a week to learn the basics of photography. Since then, I have been able to improve my technique during my travels to New York, Israel and recently in Cambodia. My favorite style is street and travel photography.

3 words to describe your world?

That’s a difficult question. It’s hard to define a world that’s constantly evolving. What probably stands out more from the Khmer Colors Expo is an Authentic, Colorful and Human atmosphere.

Can you tell us about the project around the exhibition?

In July 2018, my girlfriend Marianne went to Cambodia for a year on a humanitarian mission to Siem Reap near the Angkor temples. At the time, I had already intended to travel to Southeast Asia, as I had never been before.

In December 2018, I flew for a couple of weeks to Cambodia. This trip was a cultural but also a visual shock. One of those trips that deeply touches you.

When I came back, I had a taste of unfinished business with the country, and I had to go back. I contacted a photographer living there. Alessandro Vannucci. “Alé” is an Italian who has lived and worked in Cambodia for more than 10 years. I wanted to learn from him and be inspired by his world. In June 2019, I went back to Asia and literally went out of my comfort zone to be immersed in the culture with Alessandro.

When I returned, I had accumulated enough pictures to make a restitution of this trip. “Khmer Colors” is therefore my first exhibition.

What is Anticafé to you?

I found in Anticafé Bordeaux the perfect place to settle down and peacefully edit my photos in a creative and relaxed atmosphere. Over time, it has become my office and a personal workspace. It was actually there that the decision to hold the exhibition was made and then set up step by step. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nicolas and his team for their always warm welcome and their confidence in my work.

We went to meet Hadrien, a customer of Anticafé Strasbourg and the young founder of NIU, an activist and eco-friendly sunscreen!

Hello Hadrien, who are you, where are you from?

I am an entrepreneur, I am 25 years old and I come from Strasbourg. I am in love with nature and especially the oceans, which made me want to become a freediver early on!

You launched Niu, a start-up of eco-friendly sunscreens, can you tell us more about it?

Together with Corentin Boisselier, I founded a start-up company specializing in the development of eco-friendly cosmetics, and then we launched NIU this year. NIU is what we like to call an activist and eco-friendly sunscreen. We strived to develop a product that is as healthy for us as it is for the environment, by focusing part of our investments on environmental actions from the very beginning. Thanks to our sales, we can finance research, but also coral reef projects, beach clean-ups, plastic recycling… we also like to allow the associations we work with to meet each other, and to give more dimension to their actions by setting them up together. We’re like the Tinder of ecology!

Your crowdfunding campaign has blown up, how do you explain this craze?

It’s true that with nearly €30.000 instead of the €3000 requested, we were pretty surprised. To be honest, we expected to have to push people more to take an interest in ecology, but we were wrong. Mentalities are really changing, and in addition to supporting our developments and actions to the fullest, we realize that it is not just consumers who are buying our products, but a real community of people who are committed and bound by the same values. And I think that’s our greatest pride.

You regularly come to work at Anticafé Strasbourg, what do you find there?

Latte Macchiato frappés that are far too addictive! And more seriously, I find a real place to work there. Not just any coffee shop with wooden tables and chairs, or worn-out benches and a constant background noise. But a real cocoon to focus, with small places all different but all comfortable, peace and quiet, a lovely team… I love this place!

How would you describe Anticafé?

For me, Anticafé is a bit like the second office of any good entrepreneur.

Marine regularly gives yoga classes at Anticafé Bordeaux. From Australia to Florida, she tells us about her career and her projects.

Hello Marine, who are you, where are you from?

Hello, my name is Marine, I’m 26 years old. I come from the Reunion Island and I have been living in Bordeaux for 8 years now!

Tell us a little bit more about your background

I moved to Bordeaux immediately after graduating from high school: I enrolled in a communication/marketing school where I completed a Master’s degree. After that, I quickly found a job in marketing.

I realized that life behind a desk was not my thing, so I worked up the courage to go to Australia for a year in October 2017. I spent a year travelling, discovering a new culture and above all meeting many people. Above all, this experience allowed me to discover myself and what I really wanted to do with my life.

In Australia, yoga is very popular. During my stay, I tried several types of yoga and completely fell in love with it.

Back in Bordeaux (6 months ago now), I realized that I didn’t want to go back to my previous life so I decided to embark on a training course to become a yoga teacher. I then flew to North Florida where I discovered more spiritual aspects of yoga that I didn’t know about and the whole history behind it. It became obvious…

What do you love about your job?

So I have been teaching yoga classes in Bordeaux for 6 months now. What I love most as a yoga teacher is sharing. I meet really incredible people with whom I share the same values, the same beliefs. I learn a lot with my students. It’s very rewarding.

What’s your mantra?

“Be the energy you want to attract”. In other words, we must create the energies we want to see happening within us. I believe in the law of attraction.

Some fun facts about your workshops?

I find it amusing how some of my students copy every single thing I do. Sometimes I scratch my nose or put my hair back and I am surprised to see some people do the same. That’s funny! I often tell my students that their bodies must be allowed to express themselves and above all to listen to themselves. I am simply there as a messenger to guide them.

A future project in sight?

I am very happy because I have just launched my t-shirt brand “Spiritual wave” in collaboration with Yoann from PetitAloe. With this project, I want to transmit all my positive energies and make all women shine naturally. I hope I can do it!

For you, what is Anticafé?

Anticafé is a warm little cocoon. You don’t necessarily realize it from the outside, but once you get in, you don’t want to get out.

Marine regularly gives yoga classes at Anticafé Bordeaux. To make sure you don’t miss them, visit the Anticafé’s Facebook page????

At Anticafé, we like to make our community happy. So we contacted Anne Humbert, the founder of 23heures59editions to organize a giveaway of her Notebook for Entrepreneurship on our Instagram account. We discovered a young and original publishing house!

Hello Anne, who are you, where are you from?

Hello, my name is Anne. I worked in media (TV and web) for a long time as an artistic producer and editor-in-chief. Mainly for lifestyle and cultural shows and websites.

I decided to stop this career 3 years ago, to start my own adventure!

Can you tell us about 23h59editions?

23heures59editions is a new kind of stationery brand. All our notebooks are based on methodologies and are real pocket coaches. They are, for their happy owners, companions on the road with precise actions to be carried out over a period of a few months. Our method notebooks are based on different themes: time management, project planning, organization, entrepreneurship and this is just the beginning. I would like to create notebooks that will serve as guides in many aspects of our personal and professional lives.

What triggered your decision to embark on this new adventure?

I wanted to change professions, I had a lot of ideas, but few methods. I searched everywhere (books, websites…) to find out how I could give myself the means to achieve my ambitions and sort out all my desires. Besides, I’m a paper lover and thinking has always seemed to me much more productive and efficient when writing. My first product “The Project Notebook” (released in April 2017) is the result of this need.

What advice would you give to future project holders?

Think about your brand, your universe, your artistic direction well in advance. In particular by investing in social networks to gather a community from the start, even if the product doesn’t exist. Then, contrary to what we hear a lot: I don’t agree with the idea of quickly releasing an unfinished product.

Another piece of advice: you have to realize that you’re not going to make money for a while, so you have to accept to revise your lifestyle and be careful with your budget by not making useless investments.

Of course, know how to surround yourself and eliminate from your circle of friends all the anxious people – those who like to give advice – the frustrated ones and others. In short, sort your friends out!

Finally (and therefore to contradict everything I just said ????) listen only to yourself. You know what has to be done, you just have to not be afraid and move forward. Creating your project is a fantastic adventure and I wouldn’t go back for anything in the world.

What are the upcoming news with 23h59editions?

We have just released a to-do list notebook to stay organized on a daily basis, with very original and efficient templates. We are currently finishing the design of the Carnet du Temps co-published with Live Mentor, which is going to be incredible! Don’t hesitate to register on www.23heures59editions.fr, to follow this adventure. Finally, I’m already working on partnerships with authors and another brand. But it will be for 2020!

We’ve been following each other for a few years now with Shanty and her Shanty Biscuits adventure, customizable, tasty and damn funny biscuits! We met again recently because Shanty organized her “fake” bachelorette party at Anticafé Canal St Martin. It was the perfect opportunity to ask her a few questions!

Hello Shanty, who are you, where are you from?

My name is Shanty (yes yes, that’s my real name), I grew up in Aix-en-Provence and I’m 30 years old (and still having trouble accepting it).

How did you come up with the idea of creating Shanty Biscuits?

After graduating from high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I didn’t go to school and I only had a job to pay the bills. At a birthday party, I was given a set of kitchen accessories that included a cookie stamp with the words “Chef Approved” on it. I made the cookies and I thought it was nice to have a message on them but it would have been better if I could have chosen it, I would have put something that would suit me better!

That’s how I got the idea, then I made cookies in my apartment by myself for 2 years until the day I got too many orders and thought there was a “real” company to create!

How did you use Instagram to get your business off the ground?

Since our cookies are only sold online, Instagram was the place where I could display what we could do with the cookies, show people’s orders and so on. From 2017 and on, it became more extensive with the arrival of stories and because I had finally found my editorial line.

I started having a lot of fun on Instagram and I think people noticed! Today, it’s really where the brand lives, where we show what we do and who we are. We have a very strong involvement from the community, especially because I don’t take myself seriously, everything is very spontaneous (I don’t even know what I’m posting tomorrow) and people don’t feel like I’m selling them something. And we have a great sense of humor! ????

In retrospect, what would you do differently?

It’s funny because before I would have listed a series of mistakes, but in retrospect, I tell myself that I don’t regret having made them at the beginning, that way I don’t make them now. If I had had more self-confidence, I could have gone a lot faster! And also, maybe I should have taken more time for myself at times. But I don’t regret where I am today. Oh yes, I may regret eating so many cookies haha! ????

What are your next dreams with Shanty Biscuits?

Conquer the United States! Yeah, no less!

If you had 3 tips for someone who wants to embark on a crazy project, what would you say to them?

Don’t be afraid to screw up. You’re going to make mistakes and that’s normal. You have to make them to learn, the idea is to not make them again.

Follow your instincts rather than people’s advice.

Dare.

Find Shanty here and on Instagram of course!

And if you also want to organize an event in our Anticafé Canal St Martin and enjoy our Escape Game rooms, don’t hesitate to contact us ????
